In addition to tuning, we repair pianos. A client often tells us a tuner or salesman told them the piano was no good because it was too old - don't bother tuning, it won't hold, it can't be repaired, the soundboard is warped (?), the pads(?) have to be changed, the thing is just going to fall apart. Well, (barring the creative terms) that usually is not the case. About 99% of the time it is not the case. Without 'attacking' the sources, let's look at the issue. Every week we see pianos neglected for years or decades. Most of the times the problems are really quite minor . Usually we are able to either tune or raise the pitch and give them a working instrument on the first visit. Upon the first visit, we go over the piano with you and show and explain any and all problems. You decide what you want to do - we'll advise and show you, but you decide.
We just had a case where the owner called a piano store, told the store the age of the piano (nearly 100 years old) and without seeing the instrument they said 'it wouldn't hold tune. Don't waste your money. Anything over 15 years wasn't worth it.' Well, we checked it out. Ironically we rebuilt the piano's action about 30 years ago. It still has the original strings, bridges and soundboard. It hasn't been tuned for years (family situations) and they wanted to 'bring it back'. We raised the pitch to A=440, no strings broke and everything is working fine! A 'basket case' brought to life. Well over 15 years old and still going strong. Oh, remember, this piano is just about 100 years old. Be careful of over the phone assessments.
That's what we do - what you want us to do. If it is no good, we will tell you - we're not shy. If it's workable, we'll tell you.
Give us a holler, we'll talk with you - but we won't condemn the piano without at least looking at it.
